United Nations Organization (UNO) in its 36th Session of the General Assembly recommended to UNESCO to celebrate February 13 every year as World Radio Day. Radio is the most widely used medium which offers programs, viewpoints and content of diverse nature for all kinds of audiences globally.
So, what is the History of World Radio Day?
In the year 2010, Spanish Radio Academy proposed UNESCO celebrate a day as World Radio Day. In the consultations that followed with broadcasting unions all across the world, almost 91% were in the favor of the proclamation. Radio was very much popular due to its low-cost technology both to broadcast and receive and is suited to reach Global, National or Local Audiences.
Further deliberations were held and finally in the 36th Session of UN General Assembly February 13th, the anniversary day of the United Nations was proclaimed to be World Radio Day. Prominent Radio Organizations all over the globe commemorated the first year of World Radio Day in 2012.
What is the Significance of Celebrating the World Radio Day?
The main objective behind celebrating World Radio Day is to recognize the importance of radio as a medium of communication and raising the awareness of radio among the public and media. World Radio Day is primarily celebrated for the following reasons:
- To increase the understanding among the people and media of the value of the radio.
- To persuade Governments to promote, establish and provide access to radio.
- To give a networking focus to radio promoters and let them exchange ideas, experiences and resources.
Most of the broadcasting companies agreed to the point, the benefits of the radio are far from being fully utilized. Also, everyone agreed to join hands in protecting the radio from being overshadowed by digital technologies.
What are the celebrations taking place on World Radio Day?
Various events have been organized over the years to commemorate World Radio Day. The most prominent of the events are as follows:
- First World Radio Day was celebrated in all major cities like London, Barcelona, Switzerland, and Bangladesh. Various academicians, practitioners came together and explored ways to take radio to the most remote and vulnerable communities.
- In 2014, under the theme of Gender Equality and Women Empowerment, included building skills for youth radio and safety of women radio journalists.
- In subsequent years highlighting the contributions of young people, improving the participation as creators of radio content, saving lives through radio were themes on World Radio Day.
Every year commemorations focus on a new theme and Radio Stations around the world are invited to promote World Radio Day. BBC World Service holds activities in multi-lingual languages to promote World Radio Day.
