World Day of Social Justice : Definition, History & Significance

United Nations recognized the importance of Social Justice in order to tackle the issues of poverty, gender inequality, unemployment, human rights and social protections. It is designated 20th February every year to celebrate World Day of Social Justice.

What is Social Justice?

Social Justice can be easily understood as fair and compassionate distribution of the fruits of economic growth. Social Justice focusses Equality of Rights, Equality of Opportunities, and Equality in Living Conditions.

So, let’s take a look at the History of World Day of Social Justice

The seed for having a day for Social Justice was sown in the city of Copenhagen in the year 1995. World Summit for Social Development laid the basis for promoting national and global systems based on the principles of justice, equity and democracy.

They all gathered 10 years later at the Commission for Social Development held in New York in February 2005 and agreed to move ahead on the principles discussed in Copenhagen Summit. Finally, in the year 2007 member countries of the United Nations agreed to observe February 20 as World Day of Social Justice starting from the year 2009.

All the member countries present at the United Nations summit pledged to eradicate poverty, took the goal of full employment, gender equality and access to social well-being and justice for all.

What is the significance of World Day of Social Justice?

World Day of Social Justice has been very significant in implementing the strategy to remove poverty and unemployment. It also helps in reaffirming the faith of the United Nations in fighting against the issues of Gender Inequality, Human Rights and Social Protection.

World Day of Social Justice tends to address the following issues:

  • Rising Inequalities in the distribution of Income.
  • Rising Inequalities in the distribution of assets.
  • Prevalent Inequalities in the distribution of opportunities for work and remunerated employment.
  • Current Inequalities in the distribution of access to knowledge.
  • Disproportionate distribution of health services, social security and provision of a safe environment.
  • Variation in the distribution of opportunities for civic and political participation.

World Social Day in the present day scenario has also recognized Globalization and Interdependence are opening new opportunities through capital flows and advancement in technology. Growth in World Economy should not be limited and improvement in living standards should be equal all across the World.
